Total Requirement: Agents and brokers in California who are licensed to sell life, accident and health, property, casualty or personal lines insurance are required to earn at least 24 credit hours of continuing education during each two-year license renewal period. Agents and brokers who only have a limited-lines auto insurance license must complete at least 20 hours of continuing education during each two-year license renewal period.
Ethics Requirement: Effective January 2014, all agents and brokers, regardless of license type, will be required to complete at least 3 hours of ethics coursework as part of their continuing education requirement. (Licensees who are renewing prior to January 2014 generally must complete at least 4 hours of ethics coursework. Licensees who are renewing prior to January 2014 and only have a personal lines or limited-lines auto insurance license are only required to complete two hours of ethics coursework as part of their continuing education requirement.).
